DONKEY UPDATE: Donkey is living her best life, as a companion to a Grand Prix show jumper. Donkey serves as best friend and emotional support to her horse BFF, traveling all over the world to keep her friend company.
Meet Stitch, affectionately known as Donkey or Donquita Rita. I’ve had Donkey in my pasture for almost six months and have known her for almost a year. Due to no fault of her own, Donkey is looking for a new home.
Donkey turned 2 on June 26th. She was born in Central Florida to a BLM burro. This Jenny is as sweet as they come. She sprints across the pasture to meet my neighbors for her daily treats of carrots. She’s always the first to come for feed time. She loves her people and loves to play games. She’ll chase, fetch, roll, you name it, she’s game.
She gets along with everything we’ve had in our pasture. Mare and geldings. While she wasn’t sure of the pig to begin with, she slowly became friendly with him. She often plays a great game of tag with the dogs. If a living being will play with her, she’s all in.
The good:
- She’s halter trained
- With encouragement, she loads on the trailer.
- She can be stalled or left out
- Zero maintenance
- Will happily share feed bowls
- Stays fat on air
The needs help:
- She is mischievous. Make sure your halters and lead lines are put up - hats and boots too - because she’ll grab them and try to play keep away with you!
- She needs better ground manners. While sweet, she doesn’t quite yet respect her humans as her boss. We were almost there with daily ground training sessions, but life happened and she thinks she’s the boss again. With daily interaction I am certain she will be a respectable donkey citizen
- She’s currently not a huge fan of the farrier but with patience, her feet can be done
She is sweet but I don’t have the room to keep her and never planned for a donkey in my herd. We took her on to help out her owner who was spending increased time out of state. The owner has decided to remain out of state for a while and as such, has made the difficult decision to sell.
She will only be sold to a home where she has other outdoor pasture mates. Cows, horses, donkeys, goats, something of that nature. She loves her company. If you want a donkey to protect your herd and/or to love on and drink your coffee with, she’s your girl.
